The collection of scholarly articles in two volumes Latvia and Latvians is an essentially reworked, altered, and supplemented edition of a similar collection that was published in 2013 only in Latvian. This collection appears simultaneously also in English and Russian and is more suited to foreign readers.
Volume 1 analyses the situation in contemporary Latvia and it is introduced by the article by academician Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga about Latvia in the globalised world. Other articles present a notion about the constitutional basis of Latvia, its economy, demography, language, education and science, cultural landscape, as well as various aspects of culture, and sports. Volume 2 is dedicated to the Latvian ethnos since ancient times till the foundation of an independent state, as well as to the State of Latvia in the period 1918–1991, focussing on the problems of its development and damage made by two occupation powers.
The new edition comprises 44 papers (the 49 authors are renowned specialists in their respective fields). The edition is supplemented by 540 photographs, 90 diagrams and tables, 30 maps, and the Index of Persons including 3240 persons. All articles are original works of the authors based on the materials from numerous archives and depositories as well as on the publications of other, including foreign authors.
